10 years ago, when I was just a bit over 16 years old, I bluffed my way into professional writing by telling the managing director of an ‘information products’ company, whom I’d never met, that I was in fact 26 years old. I blagged my way through writing a book whose subtitle was ‘How to Last Longer in Bed’, which went on to sell pretty well, and then for the next several years my trajectory was set: I wrote eBooks, courses, newsletters and articles on a whole host of saucy topics.
Then, when I was about 22 years old, I got sick of it (over 500,000 words on the subject of sexual attraction alone can really fry your brain). So now what I do is pursue bigger, more interesting things. I choose areas of life that have intriguing psychology at their heart and then set about investigating them in unique and hopefully insightful ways. I still tend to focus on juicy topics, but now my modus operandi is different. Whereas once, in my teens, it was to create a good ‘product’ for buyers and my boss, now I only care about the message, the content, the point of it. I don’t care about commercial appeal, I’m only interested in how compelling, illuminating and enjoyable what I do is for the people who see it.
Today it’s all about putting fresh information out into the world in the best possible way I can.
